I selected Yes and waited as the device read the gem. Another notification appeared.

You have scanned an Eye Variation Gem. This gem will change the eye color of a monster.

“Which one do you have?” Penny asked, leaning over toward me to read my tablet.

“I guess it can change a monster’s eye color,” I told her, even though she could obviously read what was on the screen. “What about yours?”

Penny held up a jagged purple stone that looked like amethyst. “Mine is apparently a growth gem.”

“Okay, class,” Claudette called out, “it looks like you all have scanned your gems. If you would like to use them on one of your monsters, you can try that out now.”

I thought about all my monsters and their eye color. Titan had really awesome bright blue eyes that went well with his body color, so I didn’t particularly want to change his eye color. Fenris had some really badass, glowing red eyes, so those were staying. Chipper, on the other hand, had little beady black eyes, so seeing what variations he could have would be the most interesting.

I grabbed my Monster Mansion from my bag and called Chipper out of the cube. The little winged charder appeared on the desk in front of me, chirping and squeaking happily.

“It’s good to see you too, buddy,” I laughed as the little bat squirrel spun around on the desk. “We’re going to try something cool. How does that sound?”

Chipper squeaked. I could feel that he was okay with the idea through our bond.

I clicked the menu on my tablet again and selected the Variation Stone.
